Compost! Compost! Compost! Get yourself some cedar grove compost and maybe even some of their booster blend. Make sure your Hydrangea isn't getting too much sun. As for Dahlias, they can be fickle, so don't be so hard on yourself.
My hydrangea is absolutely getting too much sun and too little compost! I'm moving it next year.And the dahlia part was a joke, I gave up on dahlia's a year or so ago, that one comes up on it's own and does nothing.
